Diagnosis / Testing

Emm -type cannot be determined from a rapid test. Idaho Bureau of Laboratories (IBL) performs culture analysis and emm typing from isolates. Please see IBL’s Sampling and Submission guide related to submission of a GAS isolate here http://healthandwelfare.idaho.gov/Portals/0/Health/Labs/SSG/Clinical_Group_A_Strep.pdf.

The CDC Streptococcus Laboratory can perform typing and confirmation as well, if indicated. Contact the BCDP Epidemiology program (208-334-5939) regarding CDC type-testing and see CDC Streptococcus Laboratory testing FAQs at http://www.cdc.gov/streplab/other-streptococci-qa.html
